Re: FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"
Thanks Bill that makes alot of sence to me I'm going to check ,I think the dist. drive is off 180 and its confussing me.To get the rotor on the mark the condencer is facing tothe back of the bus and hitting on the tin .It was on the other side before. Also this isnt a new motor just cleaned it up and new rings and reconditioned heads .
Re: FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"
Now that is something I could use. I can't tell you how many times I have had idle problems and start the engine and cannot get my butt out of the drivers seat and to the back of the Bus and get ahold of the throttle arm before it stalls out. Seems to happen every spring after sitting over winter.wwebner wrote: A remote start button is also a big help. That way you can attmpt to start it while at the engine compartment instead of being 8ft away in the dr seat.
Re: FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"
If you are using a 009 in the type 4 engine, the notch in the rim of the dist will not align with the rotor at tdc. as the dist drive gear orients differently in the type 4 than the type 1 engine. This can be changed but not recomended for the inexperienced. Start fresh and make absolutly sure that you know where tdc for #1 is. Then double check you valve adj. Once you are absolutly sure about tdc,#1 put a mark on the rim of the dist.
Really doesn't matter as long as you know tdc #1 and orient cap and wires from there.
Bill
I just came to the shop and mocked up a 009 and took some photos that will help you. However am I am having great dificultyposting them on my aol dial up at the shop. Will get them up when I get home.I found 2 009's that orient the rotor 180 from each other in the same motor. I will get the info up later this afternoon.

OK, 1st pic is a new Brasil 009 installed. Note the position of the rotor.

When I rotated the dist body so the condensor would clear the engine tin,I noticed that the notch in the rin lined up with the rotor.
The last time I installed a 009 in a type 4 this was not the case. I had a couple of used 009's around so I grabbed 1 and installed it. Note the position of the rotor.

180 degrees from the new Brasilian one? I pulled out another one,German 009 and it lined up just like the 1st one(Brasil) I was somewhat confused. I inspected all 3 and they were identical 0 231 178 009 Bosch pt #s. The only dfference I found was that the Brasil was stamped Bosch on the bottom,The german one was stamped Bosch on 1 flat and Germany on the opposite flat. The one that the rotor was 180 diff from the other 2 has nothing stamped on the flats on the underside.German on the left ? on the right.

I know that this is not one of the new Chinese 009s,it is too old and the new Chinese ones I have seen DO NOT have the Bosch pt#s on them. Sooooo, all 009s are not the same.
OK,my dumb. When you get old,you forget shit. The cog on the bott of the dist can be removed and rotated 180,explains why one 009 was 180 different from others. How?when?by whom?

Re: FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"
Thank you bill for taking time to do this.Got to bussy today,so first thing tomarrow I will be starting off with making sure were tdc is.I will do that by checking the valves on the passenger side to see if they are closed when the wheel is on the notch I think is tdc. There is 2 other marks on the wheel 180 across.I'm going to post some pics of this so I can be sure I'm right.I just want to say thanks to everyone I've met and talked to ,you all have been very cool to me.Although I dont know a whole lot about mechanics I do know a lot about houses and how to fix them so if anyone gets into a bind or needs some advice just let me know.Peace

You have some Stones, Bro! Five years into buses and I still am afraid to tinker the engine. I admire your gumption! I hope to meet you this summer at the campouts!

Re: FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"
Ok having touble(nothing new) making sure the motor is at TDC .I understand what you said Bill about checking to see if the first 3 valves on the passenger side are closed when I'm on the mark.I guess what it boils down to is I cant see the valves. Are they inside the springs ?Sorry for all the questions guys ,but I trust ya'lls opinion and I want to be absolutly sure.I'll just keep on tinkering and thanks.I'm going to have a novel by the time I get this thing started.

Re: FramingSilly "There's a first time for everyone"
Started to make some noise like it wants to start, think I'm getting close.Smoke puffed out the exhaust. When I put a static light on the dist. I can turn it for some time, and the rotor can point to 2 different holes on the cap.So I'm checking the points now and I'm going to switch the wires. This might be it.
