welp, attempted to start my bus today,no dice so far.All it did was just crank and made one big boom.Any suggestions?I static timed it at 7.5 before tdc.hooked all wirres up and got oil pressure up.Theres gas in the tank and I had jumper cables hooked up .Let me explain how I put the wires on and timed it.First turned the motor so that the mark on the pulley was 7.5 to the left of 0 on the timing scale.Then took note of which direction the rotor was pointing and put the cap on.Were the rotor was pointing on the cap is were I put the wire going to #1 cylinder .Then going clockwise to #4,#3,and#2.Hooked static light to #1 on the coil and grounded it.Turned the dist. til the light came on and tried to start it.I can hear the fuel pump running when cranking.
Man that back fire scared the out of me.

I should let those with far more expereince than me weigh in on this, but 7.5 before TDC should be to the right of "0", or TDC, as the engine runs. At least check that out. thanks 6volt. I could be off quite a bit.When the motor was running last I was timing it to the left of the 0 mark.The engine ran ok ,not very good though.LOTS of smelly smoke.I'll look in the book ,could have been misunderstanding something .

See, I stand corrected. I guess this establishes that I'm now an "upright engine" guy. And to think I owned two bays with pancake motors and forgot that little detail about the scale.
Sorry Framingsilly. Thankfully, Aaron jumped in with the right info. After all, Aaron is now a "bay" expert.

Probably a fuel delivery problem,I'm going to charge up the battery for now it's dead.

With a new motor I always set it at -0- to start initially. That should be plenty close for starting. After you get it running then fart around with the timing.

I agree with 21 window. You also did not say what dist you are using.
Also,did you pre tune the carbs? You may never get it running unless you did,or they came off a running engine. A remote start button is also a big help. It just hooks up across your starter batt terminal and
the ign terminal.That way you can attmpt to start it while at the engine compartment instead of being 8ft away in the dr seat. Of coarse keep your face clear incase there is another big boom. Wouldn't want to lose that beard. Also,I would suggest keeping a fire extinguisher close at hand. If you don't need it that will be great,then you can just keep it in your bus for when you do.I'm sure you will keep us posted. A note on static timing,You said that you had rotor and plug wire for #1 lined up and turned the dist until lite went on You may have been too far when you started turning the dist. This could explain the boom as you may have been firing a cylinder with an open valve. You can static time with the dist cap off and see that you are on the notch in the dist when lite comes on.
